Our History

In 1951, Pastor Karl Pawlowski (1898-1964) founded the Johanneswerk e. V. in Bielefeld – it served as a holding organisation for several associations and foundations which were providers of diaconal facilities. At that time, two of these foundations already had a tradition stretching back over a hundred years. The foundation called Grünau had been established in 1849 in Bad Salzuflen and the Johannesstift in 1852 in Bielefeld-Schildesche. One of these associations operated facilities all over North Rhine-Westphalia making the Johanneswerk a more than regional provider from the beginning.
